Fluoride Treatment

Brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups are the foundation of a healthy smile. But there’s another powerful tool in preventing cavities: fluoride treatment.

Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and protect against decay. It works by making the teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque, bacteria, and sugars in the mouth.

Professional fluoride treatments give your child’s smile extra defense—especially during the cavity-prone years of childhood.

Types of Fluoride Treatments

There are two main types of fluoride your child may benefit from:

  • Systemic Fluoride: This is ingested, most often through a fluoridated public water supply. It helps strengthen teeth from within while they’re still developing under the gums
  • Topical Fluoride: This is applied directly to the surface of the teeth through toothpaste, mouthwash, or professional treatments. Topical fluoride helps remineralize enamel and protect against cavities

Professional fluoride treatments—such as varnish applied in our office—are a fast and effective way to help prevent tooth decay and support long-term oral health.

What to Expect During a Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments in our office are quick, painless, and effective. Here’s what typically happens:

  • Your child’s teeth are dried gently
  • A fluoride or varnish is applied using a brush or tray
  • After the application, your child should avoid eating crunch foods and drinking hot liquids for 30 minutes

Based on your child’s needs, we may recommend fluoride treatments every three, six, or twelve months. In some cases, we may also suggest fluoride products for use at home, such as prescription mouth rinses or gels.
